Fire trucks visit local elementary school

As part of its community outreach efforts, Pleasant Grove VFD joined other area agencies during a recent “heroes” presentation day at a local elementary school. Susan Coleman’s preschool students watched as two members of PGVFD showed them around a 2,650-gallon-tender.

Mark Mahan, training chief, demonstrated to the 24 preschoolers how to put on bunker gear and an SCBA air tank and mask. Officer Mandi Mischnick showed them what a brush truck looked like and explained how it was used for wildland fires. Harmony’s James Poole Elementary School preschool class spent Nov. 22 learning all about different area “heroes” and how they help their community. Other agencies that participated in the presentation included the Texas A&M Forest Service, Camp County EMS, Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

After PGVFD members finished their talk with the preschoolers, each student received their own red, fire helmet and an educational goodie bag to take home.

During the day of presentations, the students also received a talk from “Smokey the Bear,” took a ride on an ambulance stretcher, saw the inside of a police vehicle, and got to see and touch animal furs from native wildlife.
